Job Hunters beware of your Social Referee

I am AMAZED at the mentality of some people on the Internet. To think that the things you do and say are 100% private and protected, you are incredibly naive.

Although even if you know full well that your Facebook statuses or Tweets are not private, what makes you think that your next potential employer won’t be looking at your profile before they hire you? Hell, often this is better than calling references!

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged here, but personal marketing is a topic that’s been on my mind all week. I couldn’t help but share with you some of the stupidity that has presented itself on the matter…

Resume Photos

I personally don’t have a photo on my resume. But if I did, you can bet I wouldn’t be showing my cleavage or wearing my ‘around the house’ clothes, or taking a ‘selfie’ in the mirror. The same goes for your profile photos on your social sites. If you think employers may find you, change it to something respectable.

Twitter

Shortly after calling an applicant for their first phone interview, they immediately went to twitter to boast. The problem is, it wasn’t anything positive. Telling people how tired you were or how you half-arsed your questions is not professional.

Is Your Social Media Influence Important in Finding that Dream Job?

Hell yes it is! This is the year 2011. Anyone worth working for will know how to use a computer and wants to hire the best of the best. My tip for you: if you’re a professional and you’re applying for a professional position, try a lot harder to act and look professional in your digital world.
